The Family Art Fair – July 2018

On 14thJuly, we held our first art fair, The Family Art Fair. It was a warm sunny day with lots of significant events on. Serena Williams was playing Angelique Kerber in the ladies Wimbledon finals. England was getting ready to play Belgium in the third place play offs of the Football World Cup. Bristolians were celebrating Bristol Pride.

On Whitelaides Road, a group of 16 Bristol artists were setting out their stalls ready to sell to the general public. There was a real mix of artworks from traditional landscape and portrait paintings to jewellery and wooden robot bunting. I could feel the anticipation in the church, Redland Park United Reformed Church, as we prepared ourselves to open the doors to families.

As the clock turned 11am, it was time to usher people in. We had the benefit of Phil Young, aka Aquanaut, to assist with creating interest in what was going on. The surprised look on the faces of passers-by as he slowly swam past them was brilliant. They were in awe and also wondering what, why, where and how. We also had Alex Ray serenading onlookers with his dulcet tones and guitar. And if that wasn’t enough Sweet Morning had some sweet treats on offer to buy like homemade Churros with chocolate sauce and coconut balls.

Back inside Lloyd Lewis was in preparation mode as his children’s live art workshop was about to start. A chance to teach the young, and young at heart, how to draw a portrait. They were mesmerised by him. The silence was deafening as the children did their best to draw faces. The first challenge was to use just lines, then shapes and then shading. Finally, they needed to put this all together. I must admit that what they produced was impressive. These children could be the future Fill That Space artists.

It was fab to see so many families taking part in our event and to hear the surprise in people’s voices because the art is truly affordable. A great way to support the Bristol artist community and immerse yourself in local art.

Next year it will be bigger and better.
